How to Comply with FuelEU Maritime, the Easy Way

FuelEU Maritime requires compliance from ships in order to reduce carbon emissions. One option to comply is to pay the penalties, but it would be more cost-effective to comply with the regulations.

Utilizing pools can help in achieving compliance, especially when it comes to using biodiesel, which has limited availability and high prices. By using pools, the risk of high prices can be mitigated, and compliance can be focused on the vessels that are most effective and easy to comply with.

Pools can also function as a marketplace for fuel, which allows members to buy and sell compliance, hence reducing costs and maximizing the benefits from low carbon ship assets.

Getting a Headache from Guessing? Let Ahti Pool Help

Trouble finding the right biodiesel supplies? Choosing an alternative fuel feels like guessing?

Pooling compliance is an effective way to ensure that your fleet complies with FuelEU Maritime regulations.

You can save costs by using ultra-low-carbon fuels, such as e-methanol or bio-LNG, on selected vessels only and pooling the compliance for the rest of the fleet. This simple yet powerful approach allows you to focus on the most effective compliance actions.

FuelEU Maritime Regulation in a Nutshell

  • Carbon intensity reduction target
  • Applies to vessels over 5,000 GT
  • 100% of voyages within EU ports
  • 50% from other voyages with an EU port call
  • Non-compliance penalty
  • Shipowner liable for compliance
  • Cost transfer clause to operators

In FuelEU Maritime regulation, vessels can be...

Overcompliant: carbon intensity lower than required

  • Alternative fuels are more costly, jeopardise profitability and lower competitive advantage
  • Surplus compliance can be banked for future use, or pooled.
  • No penalties

Compliant: carbon intensity meets regulation

  • Optimised use of alternative fuels leads to better profitability
  • No penalties

Undercompliant: Carbon intensity too high

  • Using too carbon-intensive fuels every year
  • Penalties to be paid or borrowed from the future, with additional interest

How Does Ahti Pool Work in Practice?

  • A pool can be made up of any vessel that complies with the FuelEU Maritime regulation, without any restrictions on vessel type or ownership.
  • Charterers who have vessels under long-term TC, for example, can place their ships in a pool if agreed with the shipowners
  • Pool is valid for one calendar year at a time, and a vessel can belong to only one compliance pool per year.
  • Pool members can exchange compliance with one another within the same year.
  • The entire pool must be compliant each year.
  • Pool members can have different verifiers.
